Everything you need to know about In The Groove

Getting Started

How do I sign up for In The Groove?

In The Groove is currently in invite-only beta. You can join the waitlist on our home page, or if a friend has shared an invite code with you, use it on the sign-up page to create your account right away.

How do I connect my Discogs account?

After signing up, you'll be prompted to connect your Discogs account during onboarding. This uses secure OAuth — we never see your Discogs password. Once connected, your vinyl collection will sync automatically.

What if I don't have a Discogs account?

You'll need a Discogs account to use In The Groove, since that's where your collection data comes from. Discogs is free to sign up at discogs.com, and it's a great way to catalog your records even outside of this app.

How do I save the app to my home screen?

In The Groove is a Progressive Web App (PWA), which means you can install it to your home screen and it'll look and feel like a native app — with its own icon, full-screen experience, and push notification support.

On iOS (Safari): Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow), then scroll down and tap “Add to Home Screen.” This is also required for push notifications to work on iOS.

On Android (Chrome): Tap the three-dot menu, then tap “Add to Home Screen” or “Install app.”

On desktop (Chrome/Edge): Look for the install icon in the address bar, or go to the browser menu and choose “Install In The Groove.”

Collection & Syncing

How does the Discogs sync work?

When you connect Discogs, we import your entire vinyl collection — album titles, artists, cover art, and track listings. You can re-sync at any time from the Collection page to pick up any new additions.

How often should I re-sync?

Any time you add new records to your Discogs collection, hit the sync button on your Collection page to pull them in. The sync only adds what's new, so it's fast.

Can I sort and filter my collection?

Yes. You can sort your collection by artist or title. On the Collection page, you can also filter by genre — select one or more genres to narrow things down. Your sort preference is saved in Settings so it persists between sessions.

Listening Sessions

How do I start a listening session?

There are three ways: pick an album from your Collection, tap on a recently played album from the dashboard, or use the Scan feature to snap a photo of the album art and start playing instantly.

What are flip notifications?

When you start a listening session, In The Groove tracks the current side of the record based on the track durations. When a side ends, you'll get a push notification reminding you to flip the record. No more running over to the turntable too late.

Do I need to enable push notifications?

Push notifications are optional but recommended for the best experience. You can enable them in Settings. On iOS, the app needs to be installed to the home screen (as a PWA) for push notifications to work.

What happens if I forget to end a session?

Sessions stay active until you manually stop them. If you fall asleep listening to a record, you can end the session later — the duration is tracked based on when you started and stopped.

Album Scanning

How does album scanning work?

Point your phone's camera at an album cover and take a photo. In The Groove uses AI-powered image recognition to identify the album from your collection and starts a listening session automatically.

Does scanning work with any album?

Scanning matches against albums that are already in your synced collection. If the album isn't in your Discogs collection, the scan won't find a match. Make sure to sync your collection first.

Stylus Tracking

What is stylus tracking?

Your turntable's stylus (needle) has a limited lifespan, typically 300–1,000 hours depending on the type. In The Groove tracks how many hours you've used your stylus based on your listening sessions, and gives you a visual indicator of when it's time to think about a replacement.

How do I set up stylus tracking?

Stylus tracking is available on your Stats page. You can name your stylus (e.g., “Ortofon 2M Blue”), set the installation date, and enter the maximum expected lifespan in hours.

Can I disable stylus tracking?

Yes. If you don't want to track stylus wear, you can toggle it off from the stylus settings. You can always re-enable it later.

Liner Notes

What are AI liner notes?

While you're listening to a record, you can tap on any track in the tracklist to get AI-generated liner notes — interesting facts, history, and context about that specific song. It's designed to enrich your listening experience with the kind of details a hardcore fan would appreciate.

Stats & History

What stats does In The Groove track?

You can see your total listening time, number of sessions, most-played albums, genre breakdown, and collection stats like decade distribution. The Stats page gives you a full picture of your listening habits.

Can I see my listening history?

Yes. The dashboard shows your recently played albums, and the Stats page has a more comprehensive view of your listening history over time, including monthly trends.

Account & Settings

How do I change my theme?

You can switch between light and dark mode from Settings, or use the quick toggle in the header. There's also a “System” option that follows your device preferences.

Can I delete my account?

Yes. Go to Settings and scroll to the bottom. Account deletion is permanent and removes all your data including your collection, listening history, and stylus tracking data.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?

Use the Send Feedback option in the app menu (top right corner). You can submit bug reports or feature requests — every submission gets read.

Still have questions?

Use the Send Feedback button in the app to get in touch, or learn more on the About page.
